As cars and
SUVs get bigger, so do the deadly blind zones behind them -- now ranging up
to 50 feet and large enough to hide several small children from view.
Because of
these blind zones, at least two
children are killed each week in backover
incidents -- many hit by their own family members.
Automakers have the technology to avoid these heartbreaking deaths, but
they offer it only on high-end models or as a special option. And
government safety standards do not require drivers to see what is directly
behind them!
Tell your members of Congress that
saving children from backover deaths shouldn't be
an option.
More
children die every week that goes by without action. The Cameron Gulbransen Kids and Cars Safety Act will create a rear
visibility standard so drivers can see someone in the blind spot. Named
after a 2-year-old New York boy killed when his
father, a pediatrician, accidentally backed over him, the law will save
lives with simple technological
fixes.
This
proposal also will end the accidental strangulation of children in power
windows. It requires automakers to incorporate low cost auto-reverse
protection, much like the technology the government requires for garage
doors.
We need you
to send a strong message to lawmakers
to get this legislation moving! We shouldn’t let
any more children die simply because they don’t
have a voice in Congress.
When you are
done, please forward this message or use our tell-a-friend tool to tell
your friends to take action as well. We would like to see these bills move
forward in this Congressional session and they are starting to gather
steam. Help us build the momentum!
